I recently had a great creative consultation with a New Hampshire watercolor artist.
During our first 1.5 hour meeting, she told me about her goals for the rest of the year and we talked through how to work towards achieving them!
Her goals:
- Sustain a daily painting practice
- Participate in her first art market and sell her work in person
First we needed to break down the multiple steps it will take her to climb to the top of these two pretty hefty overall goals.
- To sustain a daily painting practice:
– Have a comfortable space/place to make art
– Pick a preferred time of day and add that into her schedule every day
– Brainstorm a list of ideas to draw from when her brain is not feeling creative
– Remember that it is not about inspiration, it’s about dedication
Once all of these components have been figured out, a consistent, daily art practice will be more likely to happen! And once she gets into the initial routine of it, the inspiration and motivation and discipline will come. - To participate in her first art market:
– Do research on what local market(s) are happening, and find some that work for her schedule
– Apply to the market(s) and hopefully be accepted! (if not, try another one)
– Decide on the products she wants to bring to the market
– Make enough of those products
– Plan out and buy the necessities for her market table setup
– Show up, be open, be welcoming, and sell!
We made a spreadsheet breaking down the market goals ever further (because markets are WORK!). Now she can check off step-by-step each goal until she is ready for her first market!
