Creativity is hard sometimes.

Well, more like: my brain works in a way that makes being creative sometime seem impossible.
Combined with first-born daughter perfectionism, the all or nothing mindset that my ADHD has so generously bestowed upon me often makes me feel like I need 17 hours of free time to even start a project. Or have the most flushed-out, fully-formed idea to simply make a mark on a page. My brain tells me I need unlimited time and the perfect conditions, or else, let’s just not be creative at all today!
Not conducive to a thriving practice.
So that’s when I call upon my Two-Color Rule.
Pick two colors. Put them on the canvas.
That’s it. I don’t need to paint an entire painting today. I just need to put two colors on this surface. In the time I have, just choose and use two colors. Just get something on the canvas or the paper. It’s not going to get done today, but at least I added to the process and was able to be creative for a moment in time during this 24 hour period.
Typically the rule helps me get out of that stuck mindset. And sometimes? I get really in the zone and use way more than two colors(!) and that’s always fun. But even if it stays a two-color day, at least I moved the process forward.
Always looking towards forward.
